Chevrolet‘s growing small-car focus has already garnered laurels for impressive sales of the Cruze compact and improved styling in the Sonic subcompact. But the 100-year-old brand faces a dilemma, vocalized recently by a few dealers:
“‘Wow, we seem to be investing an awful lot of time into that segment, and I don’t make a lot of money when I’m selling something for $16,000,’” said Alan Batey, Chevy’s U.S. sales chief, in an interview last week.

Batey was relaying some retailers’ concerns, but the conundrum extends to all of Chevrolet: As the brand adapts to a market that increasingly values small, fuel-efficient vehicles, Chevy must find a way to make them as profitably as it fulfilled drivers’ needs for big cars and trucks in decades past.
For much of its 100-year history, Chevy has boosted General Motors’ profits through high-margin vehicles such as the Impala, Malibu and the 76-year-old Suburban, which is the longest-running U.S. nameplate. In the brand’s heyday, the 1950s and 1960s, one out of every three or four vehicles sold in the U.S. wore a Chevy bow tie.
But in the years that followed, lackluster vehicles and increasing mismanagement hurt Chevrolet. The all-American brand began to turn buyers off in droves. U.S. market share fell below 20% in 1981 and first dipped under 15% in 1999. By 2009, Chevy’s U.S. market share had fallen to 12.7% — well below half its level 50 years ago.
The brand has gained share in recent years: The bow tie has graced 13.9% of all vehicles sold in the U.S. so far this year, in part because of slow sales from Japanese brands hindered by their country’s March earthquake and tsunami. As it continues to seek new buyers, GM hopes many will come from small-car drivers.

When the Chevrolet Volt first came out, I remember all the exciting hype surrounding it. A plug-in electric car with a gas engine to extend its range is a good idea in theory. And while I really wanted to like the 2012 Chevrolet Volt, I was disappointed.
The Volt’s technology is impressive, and if green driving is important to you, this is a good car for you to consider. After a full overnight battery charge, I drove the Chevy Volt from Washington, D.C. to Ellenville, N.Y. The 313-mile trip took about six hours. The battery ran out of juice after the first 30 miles and the remaining 283 miles were driven using the gas engine. This isn’t disappointing though, since the EPA says battery-only power should last for about 35 miles.
The Volt requires premium gas, and upon arrival in New York, I noticed that the fuel gauge was low. After adding some gas, I realized that at 9.3 gallons, the Volt has a smaller gas tank than other midsize cars. The only negative with a small gas tank is that you’ll be filling up more often on long road trips. For daily driving, it’s fine. The Volt’s fuel economy is impressive. The EPA says the 2012 Volt should get 95/93 mpg city/highway using only the electric battery, and 35/40 mpg city/highway using only the gas engine. I achieved a little less, but I was driving through the mountains.
One of the high-tech features in the Volt is its regenerative brakes. While I understand that they perform an additional function besides stopping the car (recharging the battery), I hated them. The pedal pulsated every time I was stopped at a red light, and it drove me crazy. They also feel like they’re grinding when you push the pedal, and it definitely takes some getting used to.

Carpet shortage forcing automakers to cut output.

The Japan earthquake and tsunami tragedy proved that disruptions at a few key suppliers could wreak havoc on the delicate auto supply chain. That point has again been proven, as weather-related flooding at a automotive carpet supplier has lead to decreased production at six North American plants.
Automotive News reports that Swiss supplier Autoneum Holding AG is dealing with a flooded facility in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania, and select General Motors and Chrysler plants are feeling the pinch. Chrysler and GM each decreased the line rates at three key plants. The carpet shortage will affect several models, including hot-selling product like the Chevrolet Equinox and Camaro (interior seen above), the Cadillac CTS, the Chrysler 200 and 300 and the Dodge Charger.
Ford hasn’t yet adjusted production at any facilities, but the automaker says it is closely monitoring the situation. Autoneum Holding also makes carpeting for Toyota and Volkswagen at the flooded Pennsylvania plant.
While GM and Chrysler are likely less than thrilled that they’ve needed to adjust production, we’re guessing that the issue will be resolved before any product shortages affect sales. But if the carpet plant doesn’t come back on line soon, the problem could only get worse.

Report: 2012 Corvette gets across-the-board price increase. Chevrolet Corvette sales haven’t exactly been rocking the charts lately. Last year, the mighty sports car saw its sales drop to a 50-year low thanks to a stagnant chassis, global recession and the arrival of the Chevrolet Camaro. Despite all this, General Motors is set to hike the vehicle’s price by anywhere from $480 to $1,150 depending on the model, according to Corvette Blogger. The site points out that the only Corvette in the armada to see a price decrease is the supercharged ZR1. Don’t think you’ll be getting a steal, though, the Blue Devil saw its price drop by just $75.
In addition, Corvette Blogger reports that the individual equipment packages have also gotten more expensive with the 2012 model. Models like the 2LT Coupe will see package prices increase from $1,195 to $2,095 while 3LT Coupe variants jump from $4,205 to $5,995. GM has officially introduced the new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu at Auto Shanghai 2011. The company has also provided further details about their upcoming model.
“The current Malibu has left an award-winning impression and changed the way people think about Chevrolet,” commented Susan Docherty, vice president of GMIO sales, marketing and aftersales.
“This all-new Malibu delivers on the intangibles of today’s Malibu but gives customers even more: more style, fuel efficiency, content and features, craftsmanship, and dynamic capabilities rivaling high-end sedans.”, she added.
The new Malibu has shorter wheelbase than its predecessor by 114 mm, but the track is wider – 1 574 mm, front and rear. The interior space is also more than the previous version of the model with 113 liters.
The Malibu will be built in manufacturing facilities around the world, including the US and China.
